The jazz ensemble is the only curricular class in the band program that requires an audition to be a performing member in the group.   This ensemble performs various different styles of music from standard big band swing charts, to latin jazz, funk, rock, Dixieland and much more.  The group is comprised of saxes, trumpets, trombones, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass, drum set and other auxiliary percussion instruments.  In addition to two school concerts the UHS Jazz Ensemble has other performance venues such as the Band Boosters silent auction, Empty Bowls Banquet, local retirement homes, downtown Frederick City locations, and others.  Audition packets are distributed in late April to current high school students and 8th graders who will be incoming freshmen.  Auditions are held in late May for the following school year.  As it is competitive to become a member of this ensemble private lessons are strongly encouraged.
